How to Draw a Squid? Let’s get Initiated!

Step 1

Starting this guide on how to draw squid, we’ll start with the head. Many squids have big round eyes, and you can draw them using oval shapes with big pupils inside. Next, we’ll draw the vast top of the head past the eyes. This will look like you’re wearing a long hat with sharp flaps sticking out of the sides.

Step 2

Squids have lots of twisted tentacles, and we’ll start drawing them in this step of drawing the squid. Use some curved lines extending from below the head to start the tentacles, and you can also change the position a bit if you like. For the tentacles, where you will see their bases, you can draw many small circle shapes for the suction cups. Once you’ve drawn these first few tentacles, you can finish this step by drawing some simple line details on the squid’s body.

Step 3

Continuing what you started in the previous step of this guide on how to draw a squid, we’ll add more tentacles to the animal. First, start this step by drawing the rest of the tentacles you started but still need to finish in the previous step.

Then we’ll add a different type of tentacle to the ones you drew earlier. This will have a long, thin stem and end in a thick, spiky dotted section at the end. We’ll have a few better to add, so we can move on to step 4 of the focus when you’re keen.

Step 4

You can always have a few tentacles when creating a squid drawing, so we’ll add a few more in this part! First, draw another alternate tentacle with a long, thin stem with a thicker end. Once you’ve drawn that, you can add another part of the regular tentacle to one of the others you started earlier. There will be some final details to add before we get to the final coloring step, so let’s take care of those details in the next part!

Step 5

This step in our guide on drawing a squid will consist of giving these final touches before coloring it. You’ll also have the chance to add some extra details! Before that, let’s add the final touches. They will mostly be made up of extra regular tentacles sticking out of the empty spaces left in the squid.

Once these are drawn and detailed, you’re ready to go! Before doing so, be sure to add any more details or ideas. One idea would be to draw the background; if you did, you could incorporate any other sea creatures you like. I could even turn this into a giant. Squid drawing it on a wrecked ship! What other views can you think of to spend it off? We can’t wait to see your creative ideas for this image!

Step 6

For the final piece of this squid drawing, you can end it with some color. In our reference image, we chose some beautiful shades of pink to finish off our image. The good news is that squid can be almost any color you can imagine! That gives you much freedom with how you might color this one. No color is off-limits, so this is your chance to let your color creativity flow!

When you’ve chosen your colors, you can choose what art tools and media you’ll use to achieve them. You might opt for painting mediums like acrylics, watercolors, or perhaps something like colored markers, pencils, or crayons. These are just some options, so what will you use to complete this fantastic drawing?
